In this article I am going to take you on a little journey with me back in to my past, helping you to understand how my paradigm was shifted and what got me to where I am today.
It’s going to get a little deep in this article and we’re going to touch on some subjects that I will be exploring and delving into in future articles. We will be looking into how to get the business motivation mindset and how we keep that mindset.
This is going to be quite a bit different to any other articles you might have read on motivation in general, because this is very much my personal approach. Some of what I have to say might resonate with you, whilst other things may seem completely bizarre, however you may pick and choose what you think will work for you, maybe this article will be the catalyst that gives you a paradigm shift.
When I was a child I remember bringing home a school report in which one of my teachers had said “Justin goes about his life as though he lives in a world of his own”, at the time I was too young to understand and completely unaware as to what that meant.
If I was just a few years older I might have taken offense with that comment, however in retrospect I can’t really disagree, in fact I wear that phrase as a badge of honor now, I was and I still am to some degree in a world of my very own.
I was the kid who was completely unshakable in my beliefs. I would prophecy my future, long before I knew what that meant or even how to pronounce the word. Every chance I had I’d tell anyone who would listen “I will go to university one day”, most people scoffed at me, but it didn’t trouble me.
Seriously, what 7 or 8 year old talks like that? Especially as I didn’t learn to read properly until I was 13. So you could understand their trepidation.
“You do realize you will need to study hard and get good grades an…blah blah blah”.
None of that ever phased me, somehow I was going to make it, I was going to get that Willy Wonka ticket and go to university.:)
I failed all my exams when I left school, my highest grade was a B in art. Maybe I should have felt embarrassed? To this day, 26 years later…nope, still not embarrassed.
That single unshakable thought had taken root within me, “I-WILL-GO-TO-UNIVERSITY-ONE-DAY”, I never lost that BELIEF.
Any way somehow I got into college and studied art and drama in several courses, then 5 years later…oh yeah baby, you better believe it, I got my @$$ in to Brunel University. I still have no earthly idea how I did it, but by the grace of God working in me, I DID IT!
A pebble thrown into a lake
It was round about that time when I started at university that a pebble was thrown into the lake of my mind causing me to have a paradigm shift. I did warn you earlier that I was going to get a little deep.
This pebble came from out of the blue and it had zero to do with me being at university.
“Why did you tell us all about your stupid university story then???”
I felt that it was important for you to know how hard and how long I fought to get where I desired to be. Thus, far in my life as it is, I’ve just arrived at the Himalayas, I still have to scale Mount Everest.
Back to this paradigm shifting pebble. I received an offer in the post to learn about secret advanced trading strategies. I can just about imagine what you must be thinking.
“Mm-hmm, it’s junk mail, tear it up and throw it away man”.
Side note: Not all junk mail is junk.
Suffice it to say, it was legitimate, but that’s not the point I want to make. Somehow, by the grace of God, out of the blue this came to me. I was in no position to capitalize upon it and I didn’t have a clue where to start.
However, this fortitudnous event caused a monumental seismic paradigm shift within me. I cannot emphasize this enough, that seemingly ordinary eveyday moment of receiving mail, set me on this path right now. The scales were scraped and cleaned from the proverbial eyes of my future life expectations. I did say this was going to get deep didn’t I?
The floodgates opened, it was as if I was given a super high dose of the red pill and I could instantly see the code of The Matrix. Up until then I had the same mindset as most normal people. Get good grades, find a great job, work until I retire, live to 100 and get a letter from the Queen…she’s strong she’ll still be around, it’s only 46 years.
Being super successful was just for the talented, intelligent and those born with a silver spoon in their mouth. This is the attitude we all adopt and hold on to as we grow up. Somehow this mindset breeds contempt for people who are blessed in this way.
For the first time in my life I was able to see the truth. I AM DESTINED TO SUCCEED! I didn’t know how or when, but I knew it will happen. The world is simply bursting with opportunities, it is inevitable. This was all happening in the late 90s when the internet was in its infancy and it would take 10 minutes for a poor quality picture to load.
Each time I received mail from the postman, I was presented with new opportunities to expand my horizons. That first (pebble) revelation, has been rippling ever since.
Be willing to fail
Thousands of books, courses, self-help gurus and numerous business opportunities have come and gone. If you are anything like me and you’re on a constant quest to be the best you that you can be, then you must have been through many of the same things and learned about the same people.
Everyone from Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill to Anthony Robbins and Dan Lok. All of them are great and there are countless others. Again, if you’re a little like how I used to be you have a bad case of shiney object syndrome.
In my desperation to get ahead in life I tried everything I studied countless different ways of making money online and offline. Some of them were the most amazing opportunities, but for whatever reason they didn’t work out for me.
In some cases I have to put my hands up and take responsibility for my own failures for not making them work. In other scenarios, I just wasn’t wise enough to avoid the scammers. Sometimes desperation forces you to make dumb mistakes.
Throughout all my miner successes and my monumental mistakes I’ve retained the same attitude, I AM DESTINED TO SUCCEED!
I have failed an innumerable amount of times, I don’t enjoy failure, however I endure it. I no longer take stupid risks, however I do take calculated risks. In order for you to truly appreciate your triumphs, they have to be measured against, what it took to get you there.
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:14 King James Version (KJV)
I have to admit that I hate failing, who doesn’t? It irritates me to the very depths of my bones, but for some unfortunate reason, I seem to be really good at failing. So I use my failures to drive me forward, if I have too I will fail upwards.

Remember why you’re in business
Sometimes, being only human I’ve wanted to give up. I keep trying so many things and I’ve hit so many impassable road blocks. What is it going to take to get me where I want to be?
Many of you may have experienced that visceral feeling of frustration, when you just want to stop. You start asking yourself these questions.
- Why is this so difficult?
- When is this going to happen for me?
- Who am I doing this for?
These are just a few pertinent questions that spring to mind and you’re about understand why.
Why is this so difficult?
If it was easy everyone would be doing it. Most people choose the easy path in life and there’s nothing wrong with that. If they feel comfortable and happy with their choices and everything is working out just fine for them, why would they rock the boat?
Taking the road less traveled, in my opinion is born from two necessities. 1 Maybe you like a challenge, you’re not satisfied with the status quo and you want more from life. 2 You have no other choice, life is extremely uncomfortable and there’s no one else you can turn too but yourself.
Either way and whatever your reasons are, when you choose this path it’s never easy, that’s why it is the road less traveled. Your faced with uncertainty at every corner, very few people will understand you and there is always a steep learning curve.
However, when you do succeed, everything you’ve been through, every challenge you’ve faced and surpassed will be worth it.
When is this going to happen for me?
To quote Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, “IT DOESN’T MATTER”. Just keep diligently working towards your goal. Giving up is never an option, no one wants a life filled with regrets and what/if’s.
The only thing you need to be concerned with is putting in the work, if you concentrate on that and you remain consistent, the success you’re striving for will inevitably come.
For whom and why am I doing this?
Using myself as an example, in as much as my ambition spurs me on to want to have an amazing lifestyle, helping my family and friends are my top priorities.
When I think about the people closest to me and how much I would love to be the person they turn to in their hour of need, it encourages me in those moments of doubt when I question if I should carry on. I have a self-imposed sense of responsibility to want to make sure that I’m in a position to assist those who care about me.
Many of you will relate to this sentiment, you may also have wider, loftier and more altruistic visions for who you will want to help. There could be charities that are important to you, worldwide causes you want to help make a difference with, you may also have a passion for philanthropy.
In those inevitable moments of doubt when you feel like giving up, think of those people and causes important to you. Let that be the catalyst that strengthens your resolve and motivates you to fulfill your business goals.
Going against the grain
In more ways than one, you are following a different path to the norm. This might cause resentment from some of your peers, maybe not in all cases, but it should be something you must prepare yourself for.
A lot of business gurus advise entrepreneurs to tell others about their business goals, so that they remain accountable. The understanding behind this practice is that if you start to fall short of the mark, those people you have told about your goals will encourage you to not give up.
I tend to disagree with this practice, but with one caveat. If you do tell others about your business goals, make sure they’re like-minded people who understand exactly where you’re coming from and understand your ambition.
People who don’t have the same mindset as you, will from a misguided sense of over protection cast doubt in your mind, but often with the best of intentions.
It will be more beneficial to you if you only share with people who support your vision and will help, encourage and push you every step of the way.
Rev yourself up – get inspired
Inspiring yourself is of so much importance, staying motivated in your business can be an uphill battle and it can also be a very lonely endeavor. This is why you must learn how to draw inspiration from any source you can find.
This is going to be a little different to the usual advice you would get on being inspired. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking conventional wisdom. I still read self-help books, I listen to self-help audio books and I learn from many of the guru’s.
As you already know inspiration can come from various sources so long as you are open to it. We’re going to briefly touch on some of my personal eclectic sources of inspiration. These are sources that work for me, they might also work for you or lead you to your own eclectic sources of inspiration.
1 I like watching movies where the main character has fought through adversity, a tough background or ridicule, but eventually they triumphed. Good examples would be as follows:-
- The Pursuit of Happiness
- Working Girl
- Legally Blonde
- Erin Brockovich
The movies above are just a few of my favorites, they’ve built me up and I’ve examined myself because of these films. It is a great source of inspiration to watch people, real or fictional fighting through adversity and succeeding.
2 Another source of inspiration for me are certain YouTube channels. That sounds rather vague…to clarify my point, I like inspirational YouTube channels as listed below:-
The above channels are, but a few of my favorites. These videos are very edifying, they serve at the very least two purposes in my opinion. Firstly, they give me a sense of distinction and uniqueness making me feel vindicated for wanting to improve my life and circumstances.
Secondly, they strengthen my resolve and ignite a burning desire within me, to see my ambitions through to their triumphant conclusion. I don’t watch these videos on a consistent basis, however the messages in these videos remain with me for quite some time.
3 This also might seem somewhat different to say the least but, music has a wonderful ability to inspire and motivate. There are a few songs that I enjoy listening to and I treat some of them as anthems. Also, I am a great advocate of instrumental music.
Anything from classical music to Jazz Fusion. For some reason the dramatic arrangements and compositions of some pieces of music just resonate with me on a very deep level.
Regardless of whether I’m working on my business or just enjoying some recreation time, I listen to the same type of music. Below is a brief list of songs, instrumental pieces and composers that I listen to regularly.
- Sammy Davis Jr – I’ve Gotta Be Me
- Journey – Don’t Stop Believing
- Focus – Hocus Pocus
- Sugar Pie DeSanto – Go Go Power
Classical Music Composers
- Holst – Mars
- Holst – Jupiter
- Holst – Mercury
- Holst – Saturn
- The best of Debussy
- The best of Prokofiev
- The best of John Williams
- The best of Rachmaninoff
The above are just a small sample of the genre’s of music I listen to on a regular basis to boost my confidence, to motivate me to keep going, also to calm me down and put me in the right frame of mind to do my work.
In the same way some people use music to motivate themselves while exercising or to calm down while reading or meditating, you can use music in the same way to focus your mind while working on your business.
4 I think spirituality has a serious role to play in business motivation. Approaching this subject from my own personal viewpoint as a Christian. The Holy Bible offers a great deal of motivation for people in business.
Regardless of your spiritual or religious beliefs, I think it would be very beneficial to add a spiritual element to your motivational arsenal. The reason why I place so much importance on spiritual motivation is because as amazing as we all are, we’re still only human.
Adding a spiritual element to our business motivation reaches far deeper than you would imagine. You develop a confidence and a drive that’s difficult to describe, because you’re not just relying on will and mindset alone, which can be exhausting. Reverse engineer your success
Finally, this is probably the most practical of all my strategies for motivating yourself in business. Start where you ultimately want to be and work your way back to now.
The great thing about doing this is that you can imagine what it would be like to be where you want to be, all the sensations, emotions and excitement of having all the things that you wanted for so long.
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big, how much would you like to be living on, will it satisfy your dream lifestyle? For example, let’s say you want $10,000 per month. That would equal $2,500 per week, $500 per day, if you take a rest at the weekend.
If your monthly goal is more conservative than $10,000 per month, then it might feel even more obtainable. The point I’m trying to get across is, you want to make it simpler to achieve your objective, so it won’t feel quite as unattainable.
Hopefully, this exercise helps motivate you to turn what seems like an unassailable dream into a practical and realistic goal. I really hope you enjoyed this article I had a great time putting this together.
Committed to your success,
